Weekly Update – ABC Picks Up Flash Forward; Adult Swim Picks Up Titan Maximum; Plenty of Superheroes Headed to the Big Screen
May 11, 2009 at 8:02 am | In News and Updates, Paul S. White | 2 CommentsFlash Forward Goes Ahead: As next week’s infronts with the advertisers approach, ABC has gone ahead and given the greenlight to the Science Fiction series Flash Forward with a thirteen episode commitment. In the series, everybody on the planet blacks out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds, then begins to have disturbing visions of the future. The show was adapted by David Goyer (Threshold) and Brannon Braga (Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Enterprise, Threshold) from the novel by Robert J. Sawyer. Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone) will also come on board as executive producer and show runner.
Titan Maximum Parodies Giant Robot Anime: Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim will add a new show to its lineup from the creators of Robot Chicken. Titan Maximum will tell the story of an elite group of young pilots who command ships that can come together to form a giant robot. The series harkens back to Japanese animated programs like Voltron and series co-creator Tom Root comments:
“There were always teams of extraordinary young people with the fate of the universe in their hands. In reality, that would end terribly. The last thing you want when giant monsters attack is a bunch of teenagers in charge of defending you. ‘Titan Maximum’ is about what would really happen if a team of idiot kids was in charge of a 6-story-tall robot.”
The series has received a nine episode order.
Movie News: With the success of Wolverine, Marvel is currently looking to do a spinoff with the Deadpool character who appeared in that movie. Hugh Jackman meanwhile has plenty to keep him busy as plans move forward for a Wolverine sequel and as he is set to star in another comic book related movie, the supernatural Ghostopolis. And, yet another comic book character may make the leap to the big screen as early talks are underway to do a movie based on DC’s popular anti-hero Lobo.
Virtuality will Air in Summer: FOX will finally bring Ronald Moore’s pilot Virtuality to the air on July 4th. Focusing on the crew of a deep space mission who rely on virtual reality to pass the time, the original pilot was completed last year. However, FOX executives were not excited about the completed project and asked for some retooling. The fact that they will now air it in the middle of Summer when viewership is at its lowest suggests that this will not be intended as a series launch and that the project will die after it airs.
