Premiere Alert – Supernatural and Vampire Diaries Bow Tonight

The wait is finally over!  After four months we finally get to see Sam and Dean deal with their somewhat apocalyptic gaff that allowed Lucifer to escape from Hell.  The Fall 2009 season of Science Fiction and Fantasy shows kicks off tonight with the premiere of Supernatural Season 5 and there will be plenty of fire and brimstone for the brothers to contend with in the upcoming weeks.

And just before Supernatural returns at 9 PM CST on the CW, freshman entry Vampire Diaries gets its premiere on the same network at 8 PM CST.  This adaptation of L.J. Smith’s novel series looks like it will give us Twilight for the small screen and appears to be an ideal fit for the CW’s target demographic if young females.

Next week brings more Fall premieres and you can read about all of the shows that will bow during the first half of the season at our Fall 2009 Science Fiction and Fantasy Preview page.

And one more bit of news for Eureka fans.  Matt Frewer’s character, Taggert, makes a return to the show tomorrow night after being absent all of Season 3.  In the episode “Have an Ice Day”, the animal-expert Aussie returns to the fold and appears to bring the next Ice Age with him.

Weekly Update: Marvel to Become a Mickey Mouse Company?

Disney Buys Marvel: In a stunning development last week, Disney announced that they were buying Marvel Comics. The $4 billion deal will bring the home of such lucrative properties as Spider-Man, The X-Men, and the Fantastic Four into the fold of the entertainment giant. In part, the deal was made to attract more young males to Disney properties as that company already has had trouble holding onto that demographic. This will not affect pre-existing deals that Marvel has with companies like Sony and FOX for characters like Spider-Man and The X-Men, but once those deals expire, the Mouse House will probably extend exclusive ownership over those properties. In its vast entertainment empire, Disney also owns the Pixar animation studios and the ABC television network.

Lena Headly to Thrones: Work continues to progress on Game of Thrones, HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy book series, and they just announced the addition of Lena Headey to the show’s cast. Headey, recently off the cancelled Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, will play Queen Cersei of House Lannister. Also set to star in the pilot are Sean Bean, Mark Addy, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Peter Dinkladge. Thrones will most likely air sometime time in early 2010.

MTV Developing Teen Wolf Series: In yet another television adaptation of a movie franchise, MTV has ordered a pilot for a series based on the 1980’s Teen Wolf which starred Michael J. Fox. In that film, Fox played a high school student who finds out that he is a werewolf. According to an MTV executive, their spin on the concept will give us “a dramatic thriller with two best friends in the center who provide a great comedy element: They are two very relatable characters on the outer circles of popular cliques.” There’s no word at this point on a target airdate for the series.

Defying Gravity’s Voyage to be Cut Short? ABC’s Summer import series Defying Gravity has definitely not pulled stellar ratings so far with an average rating around 1.0 with adults 18-49. And with the fall premieres just around the corner its chances of completing its run looks slim. The show is currently on their schedule through September 13th (the show’s eighth episode). But the networks new offerings start to pop up the following week, with no indication that Defying Gravity will continue to air its remaining episodes once the Fall season kicks off. The show could get moved to Saturday nights to finish out its run, or they may just cut it completely from their schedule (like they did with Pushing Daisies and Eli Stone last Fall, though both of those got to air out their remaining episodes this past Summer). They may also chose to let the show wrap it its first (and likely only) season online like NBC did with The Listener this Summer.

Summer Glau to Join Dollhouse: We had previously mentioned that Joss Whedon wanted to find a place on Dollhouse for Summer Glau (recently off the cancelled Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles). Now she has officially been announced as a member of the cast playing a recurring character who is a Dollhouse employee and who shares a past with Echo (Eliza Dushku). Glau previously worked with Whedon on the short-lived but fan-championed Firefly. (Full Article)

Weekly Update – Bryan Singer May Not be Doing BSG Just Yet; Warehouse 13 Renewed

Bryan Singer Not Working Battlestar Galactica Just Yet? Last week, we passed on the news that Bryan Singer would direct the upcoming big screen version of Battlestar Galactica which would follow the original 1978 series instead of the recent re-imagining from SyFy.  Now, Sci Fi Scoop is reporting that  the film may not be moving forward just yet.  According to that site, his next project will most likely be a remake of Jack the Giant Killer for New Line.  And after that he has a commitment with Warner Bros. for a remake of Excaliber and he is also eyeing an X-Men prequel titled X-Men: First Class.  So whether he sticks with the Battlestar Galactica project, and whether that comes to fruition with our without him, remains to be seen.

Warehouse 13 Renewed: Coming as no surprise, SyFy’s hit new series Warehouse 13 received a renewal for a second season.  It is the most-watched original show in that network’s history having averaged 3.7 million viewers per episode so far in its first season.  It has also scored well with female audiences, delivering the highest numbers ever from that demographic for the cable channel.  That was actually one of the goals for the network when it recently rebranded to SyFy this past July.  Now if only they would pick up ABC Family’s cancelled The Middleman to pair up with the series, they could probably boost their female audience even more.

ABC Television Series in the Works: The Fall 2009 season has not even begun, but ABC is already working on potential new Science Fiction and Fantasy related television shows.  They have picked up Clive Barker’s Hotel which Barker will produce and Saw franchise veterans Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will write.  The series would focus on ghostly occurrences at a haunted hotel.  Also, ABC plans to move forward with a small screen version of the book The Time Traveler’s Wife, which just recently hit theaters with a feature film adaptation.  Friends creator Marta Kauffman will develop it as a series and allegedly ABC had plans for this years before the movie came out.  Both series, if picked up, would bow no sooner than Spring 2010.

Movie News – Shazam and Yellow Submarine: With the all success of super heroes on the big screen of late, DC is looking to kick-off yet another franchise in that realm.  They are moving forward with a feature film adaptation of Shazam! which will be written by Bill Birch and Geoff Johns.  Film plans for this character have actually been floating about for a while, so we will see if this attempt will gain any momentum.  Also, iconic director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forest Gump) is hoping to remake the classic animated movie The Yellow Submarine which starred the Beatles.  He is currently in negotiations over the rights for the property and would do it in the performance capture animation style that he used for Polar Express and the upcoming A Christmas Carol.  No word on whether the two surviving Beatles would be involved with the project.

Weekly Update – Bryan Singer to Direct Battlestar Galactica Movie; The Sarah Connor Chronicles May Live on

Bryan Singer to Work on BSG Movie: The much-rumored big screen adaptation of Battlestar Galactica is moving forward and now Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) has been officially attached to the project.  According to HitFix, Singer will produce and direct the project which will not be a continuation of the version that recently finished its run on Sci Fi Channel, but will give us yet another incarnation of the story that began with the 1978 series.  Singer had actually been working on a BSG revival with the Sci Fi Channel earlier this decade, but it got shelved after the September 11th attacks because of the feeling that depicting a Cylon sneak-attack would not sit well with American audiences at that time.  This version would have been a sequel to the original 70’s series.  By the time that the Sci Fi Channel decided to revisit the project, Singer was unavailable, thus leading to the version imagined by Ronald Moore and David Eick.  Original series creator Glen Larson will be involved with the new movie as well which is currently only in the planning stages.

Sarah Connor Chronicles to Return? Rumors continue to circulate across the Internet that FOX’s recently cancelled Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles may still live on.  Allegedly, a direct-to-DVD movie is on the horizon which could lead to a revival of the TV series.  This is supposedly tied to the next big screen installment which may or may not tie back to the television series.  All of this is purely speculation at this point, though, and no official word has been released.  Stay tuned for further developments.

Two Comic Book Related Series in the Works: This past week, word has come out about plans for two different  television series with comic book roots.  AMC, known for its critically acclaimed series Mad Men and its upcoming remake of The Prisoner, is working on an adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series The Walking Dead written by Robert Kirkman.  The series focuses on police officer Rick Grimes as he leads a group of survivors after a zombie apocalypse.  Also, NBC has picked up Midnight Mass, based on the Vertigo comic book series.  This one follows a husband and wife team who investigate cases involving the supernatural.  Both projects are still in the early phases and have not announced a timeline for completion.

Casting News: NBC’s Heroes gets yet another cast member and once again dips into the Science Fiction and Fantasy vaults to bring forth a familiar face.  Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters movies, will come on board as a Baltimore police officer.  Also, comedian Patton Oswalt will join the cast of Caprica playing (what else?) a comedian who hosts a popular talk show.  And Joe Morton, who plays Henry Deacon on SyFy’s Eureka, will join ABC’s Brother’s and Sister’s in a recurring role this coming season.  There is no word on whether this will affect his ongoing participation in the SyFy series which was recently renewed for a forth season.

Weekly Update – Jericho Movie Still Possible; Ridley Scott to Direct Alien Prequel; Futurama Cast to Return

Tags: , , , ,

Jericho Wrap-Up Movie Still Possible: You just can’t keep a good show down. CBS’s post-apocalyptic series Jericho survived cancellation after its first season by a raucous fan campaign only to get cancelled again after it shortened second season. A second campaign, which included fans airing commercials in Los Angeles and putting up a billboard, failed to generate a third season, but producers plan to continue the story in comics and word of a Jericho movie continues to get batted around. Most recently at the San Diego Comic Con when Lennie James, who played Robert Hawkins in the series, said that “the idea of a movie is still on the cards”. Similar rumors have been floating around for a while, but nothing concrete has moved forward yet. Fans of the show still lobby for its continuation, though, and perhaps their efforts will eventually convince CBS or another network to develop the movie.  The comic book continuation, billed as “Season 3″, will be released in October from Devil’s Due Publishing.

Ridley Scott Returns to Alien: The once moribund Alien film franchise looks set for a new start, and the original director is set to return to helm the revival. 20th Century fox is moving forward with the much-rumored prequel to the first Alien movie, and Ridley Scott, who originally only planned to produce the film, has decided to take up the director’s chair. Jon Spaihts is currently working on the script and no timetable for release has been set yet.

Futurama Voice Cast Returns: When Matt Groening’s Futurama returns with new episodes to Comedy Central, it will have the same voice cast as the show’s original run. The voice actors of the five leads had been holding out, allegedly asking a must higher salary than what the studio offered, but have finally agreed to terms to return to their previous roles. When the cast announced their holdout, production company 20th TV moved forward with a search for new voice actors. This eventually prompted compromises from both sides which led to the deal with the original voice actors. The new episodes of Futurama will begin airing on Comedy Central in 2010.

Eureka, True Blood Renewed: As we noted in last week’s Orbitting the Blogosphere column, Eureka has received a renewal for a fourth season.  That show is currently airing the second half of its third season and the fourth should debut next Summer.  Also, HBO has given the nod to True Blood for a third season.  That show will wrap up its second season in September.

Casting News: Dominic Monaghan, who played Charlie on Lost through its fourth season (and still appears in flashbacks), will move to another ABC Science Fiction series this Fall. He has signed on with Flash Forward which chronicles the events after everybody on the planet blacks out for 2 minutes and 17 seconds and sees visions of the future. Also, Prison Break veteran Robert Knepper will take the role as the main heavy on Heroes in its fourth season. He will play the leader of a traveling carnival that recruits people with special abilities.

Spielberg Invasion Pilot gets Cast: Big screen mogul Steven Spielberg will produce the pilot for an alien invasion television series for cable channel TNT based on an idea that he and Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) developed and that Rodat will write.  The story will take place after an alien invasion has wiped out most of the population of the earth and will follow a small resistance group fighting against the occupying force.  Noah Wyle (ER, The Librarian) will star in the pilot and Moon Bloodgood, Jessy Schram, Seychelle Gabriel and Maxim Knight have joined the cast.  The project currently has not received a title and has no timeline for completion.

SyFy Announces Fall Premiere Dates: The newly dubbed SyFy has announced the premiere dates for the coming Fall season for Stargate: Universe and Sanctuary.  The third installment in the live action Stargate franchise will kick-off with a two-hour debut on Friday October 2nd at 9 PM EST.  The series will then take up its ongoing Friday 9 PM slot the following week.  The second season of Sanctuary, which stars Stargate alum Amanda Tapping, picks up on Friday October 9th where the series will take up the 10 PM lead out slot for the rookie Stargate: Universe.

Defying Gravity on ABC: Sounding very similar to Virtuality, Defying Gravity will debut on August 2nd on ABC.  The series follows eight astronauts on a deep space mission whose daily activities are filmed and transmitted back to Earth as the subject of a documentary.  Christina Cox (Blood Ties) and Ron Livingston (Office Space) head up the cast, and Cox insists that despite some surface similarities, this movie is closer to Grey’s Anatomy than VirtualityDefying Gravity is a joint Canadian/British/US/German production with thirteen episodes planned for its first season.

Sean Bean to Head HBO’s Game of Thrones: Production moves forward on HBO’s series Game of Thrones based on George R.R. Martin’s fantasy-book series.  Sean Bean, who played Boromir in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings movies, has been signed for the show’s lead role.  He will play Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark in the series which follows the struggle among seven kingdoms for control of the Iron Throne.  The series is currently looking at a 2010 start date.

Voltron to be Next Robot in Line? The enormous success of the Transformers live action movie franchise (Transformers 2 has now topped $400 million in domestic and international box office receipts) has production companies looking for the next big thing in that vein.  This has prompted Atlas Entertainment to snatch up the rights to the early 80’s Voltron anime series which found success in an edited version in U.S. markets.  There is now word at this point, though, on how quickly they will try to move forward with a live action movie version of the property.

Stan Lee’s Time Jumper Debuts Online Tomorrow

Time JumperThe infamous Stan Lee (co-creater of much of the Marvel Universe) is still creating superheroes.  And his latest creation has yet another twist to it as Stan Lee’s Time Jumpers will debut online tomorrow as a digital comic.  Produced through a partnership between Walt Disney and Lee’s POW Entertainment, the comic will be available as a multi-media creation that can be viewed on a mobile  phone or online and will also come out in standard comic book format.  The electronic version expands on the regular comic book format by including music and voices.  The first “issue” will be available for free at the TimeJumper.com website iTunes in the TV shows category.  After that, subsequent installments in the series can be purchased for 99 cents.

The series follows the adventures of a man who works for the super-secret organization HUNT (Heroes United, Noble and True) and who has a cell phone known as The Articulus.  This phone allows the user to travel in time (I have checked with AT&T and Verizon, and this feature has not been added to their plans just yet).

A special panel at this year’s Comic Con in San Diego will also present and discuss Stan Lee’s newest creation.  Check back with us next week for a review of Time Jumper.

Weekly Update – NBC Gives The Listener the Boot; New Futurama Could have a New Cast

July 20, 2009 at 6:00 am | In News and Updates, Paul S. White, Ratings Results | Leave a Comment
Tags: , , ,

NBC Yanks The Listener: Summer Canadian import The Listener got off to a slow start in the ratings in June then only went downhill from there, prompting NBC’s decision to pull it from their schedule. After its July 23rd airing, the peacock network will replace the series with Law and Order repeats in the 10 PM EST Thursday timeslot. However, the series has done well in Canada, and it aired internationally earlier this year, so it is not completely dead. There is no word at this point if the show’s Canadian production company still plans to a second season based on its success outside of the states, though. NBC does still plan to stream the remaining episodes of the series on its website (and they will most likely be available on Hulu.com as well).

New Futurama May Sound Different: Comedy Central is moving forward with its plans to revive Matt Groening’s animated series Futurama, but the finished product may sound a bit different from its original run. The network has been unable to work out a deal with the original voice actors from the series, whose salary demands exceed the shows projected budget. Thus Comedy Central has moved forward and started auditioning new actors to voice the familiar roles. Whether this move will prompt the original cast to alter their demands is uncertain, but the cable channel is apparently willing to proceed without them if necessary.

Ratings Update: Eureka’s move to Friday nights did not hurt its numbers too much as the premiere of Season 3.5 on July 10th brought in 2.6 million viewers which was only slightly down from last Summer’s premiere episode of Season 3. That’s pretty good considering Fridays are typically a low viewership night. Warehouse 13 continued to hold strong on Tuesday’s as that show’s second episode pulled in 3.4 million viewers, just slightly less than it had in its debut. The news was not so good for network Science Fiction and Fantasy shows, though. Merlin continues to slip, dropping to a 0.9 rating in the 18-49 demographic and about 3.6 million viewers. Seeing as NBC just yanked The Listener from its schedule for low ratings, Merlin could follow shortly behind. Part 1 of NBC’s disaster mini-series Meteor did not do too much better, pulling an average of only a 1.1rating across its two hours and less than 5 million viewers. Thursday’s airing of The Listener actually saw a bit of a rebound as it increased to a 1.2 rating, but that won’t change the network’s mind about cancelling the series. And lastly, Saturday’s burn-off run of Kings continued to languish.
