The wait is finally over! After four months we finally get to see Sam and Dean deal with their somewhat apocalyptic gaff that allowed Lucifer to escape from Hell. The Fall 2009 season of Science Fiction and Fantasy shows kicks off tonight with the premiere of Supernatural Season 5 and there will be plenty of fire and brimstone for the brothers to contend with in the upcoming weeks.
And just before Supernatural returns at 9 PM CST on the CW, freshman entry Vampire Diaries gets its premiere on the same network at 8 PM CST. This adaptation of L.J. Smith’s novel series looks like it will give us Twilight for the small screen and appears to be an ideal fit for the CW’s target demographic if young females.
Next week brings more Fall premieres and you can read about all of the shows that will bow during the first half of the season at our Fall 2009 Science Fiction and Fantasy Preview page.
And one more bit of news for Eureka fans. Matt Frewer’s character, Taggert, makes a return to the show tomorrow night after being absent all of Season 3. In the episode “Have an Ice Day”, the animal-expert Aussie returns to the fold and appears to bring the next Ice Age with him.

The Summer Blockbuster season is all but over as September eases in and the more “thoughtful” movies (that is, the ones that won’t make as much money) get a chance on the big screen. Theater owners are pretty happy with the final tally from the hot months, though, as the Summer movies brought in over $4 billion in revenue and increased receipts by 5% from the prior year. So now it’s time to take a look at how well Science Fiction and Fantasy movies performed at the Box Office this past season. (Full Article)
Weekend Box Office Results – Final Destination Wins Again

According to the receipts, theaters did brisk business over the Labor Day weekend, though no one single picture dominated the theaters for the weekend. Deathly sequel Final Destination 4 repeated at the Number 1 slot brining in a Friday through Sunday total of $12.3 million. Sci Fi action/adventure flick Gamer debuted with $9 million, only managing to make it as high as Number 4. Not very good numbers for an opening weekend and with the Box office starting to slack off with the end of Summer, this one will have a hard time making much more of an impression. District 9 came in just after Gamer and took the Number 5 slot, while Halloween II slipped from the Number 3 slot it had last week to Number 6. G.I. Joe slid to the Number 8 slot and The Time Traveler’s Wife ended up at the Number 10 spot. Up continued its return to the Top 20 for a second week, though just barely, as it held on to the Number 20 slot.
Following are the results for all of the Science Fiction and Fantasy oriented movies in the Top 20 for the weekend of September 4-6:
Title / Box Office Rank (Rank Prior Week) / Weekend (Total) Draw
1) The Final Destination – Prior Wk: 1, Draw (Total): $12.37 MM ($47.51 MM)

Weekend Box Office Results – Number 1 is the Final Destination
September 1, 2009 at 8:56 am | In Box Office Results, Paul S. White | Leave a CommentTags: Science Fiction Movies
In a somewhat light weekend for the Box Office, Horror flick rehashes Final Destination 4 and Halloween II bowed at the Number 1 and 3 spots respectively. Final Destination took in $27.4 million, which might seem kind of low for an opening weekend, but considering its modest budget (by Hollywood standards) of $40 that puts it on target to end up in the red. Rob Zombie’s sequel to his Halloween remake took in only $16.3 million in its debut, but already topped its low budget of $15 million. In fact, this one did well enough to receive an order for another sequel (Halloween 3-D) which will bow next Summer.
District 9 showed that it has some staying power at the end of the Summer season as it pulled in another $10 million at the Number 4 slot. G.I. Joe raked in another $7.7 million at the Number 5 slot and date movie choice The Time Traveler’s Wife hung in at Number 7 with $6.4 million. Last week’s Box Office clunker Shorts eked out a few more receipts this past weekend with a $4.5 million tally. Up also returned to the Top 20 after a two week absence, probably the result of it hitting the Dollar Theaters. And Transformers prepared for its exit after ten weeks in the Top 20 as it dropped to the Number 20 slot.
Following are the results for all of the Science Fiction and Fantasy oriented movies in the Top 20 for the weekend of August 28-20:
Title / Box Office Rank (Rank Prior Week) / Weekend (Total) Draw
1) The Final Destination – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $27.41 MM ($27.41 MM)
3) Halloween II (2009) – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $16.35 MM ($16.35 MM)
4) District 9 – Prior Wk: 2, Draw (Total): $10.27 MM ($90.38 MM)
5) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Prior Wk: 3, Draw (Total): $7.72 MM ($132.15 MM)
7) The Time Traveler’s Wife – Prior Wk: 4, Draw (Total): $6.45 MM ($47.9 MM)
8) Shorts – Prior Wk: 6, Draw (Total): $4.51 MM ($13.21 MM)

Weekend Box Office Results – District 9 Drops to Number 2
August 25, 2009 at 6:30 am | In Box Office Results, Paul S. White | Leave a CommentTags: Science Fiction Movies
In a relatively slow weekend for Science Fiction and Fantasy at the Box Office, District 9 ceded the Number 1 slot to Quentin Tarantino’s war movie Inglorious Basterds this past weekend. Still, the Peter Jackson produced Science Fiction film pulled in $18 million for the weekend and elevated its domestic gross to almost $73 million, more than twice the movie’s budget. G.I. Joe slipped to the Number 3 slot in its third week of release, and The Time Traveler’s Wife dropped to Number 4. The kid-oriented fantasy film Shorts had a pretty poor performance out of the starting gate as it only pulled in $6.4 million in its opening weekend. Expect to see that one move quickly to the dollar theaters.
Following are the results for all of the Science Fiction and Fantasy oriented movies in the Top 20 for the weekend of August 21-23:
Title / Box Office Rank (Rank Prior Week) / Weekend (Total) Draw
2) District 9 – Prior Wk: 1, Draw (Total): $18.21 MM ($72.8 MM)
3) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Prior Wk: 2, Draw (Total): $12.2 MM ($120.24 MM)
4) The Time Traveler’s Wife – Prior Wk: 3, Draw (Total): $9.74 MM ($37.17 MM)
6) Shorts – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $6.41 MM ($6.41 MM)

Weekly Update – Bryan Singer May Not be Doing BSG Just Yet; Warehouse 13 Renewed
August 24, 2009 at 6:30 am | In News and Updates, Paul S. White | 1 CommentTags: Battlestar Galactica, Science Fiction and Fantasy Television, Super Hero Movies, Warehouse 13
Bryan Singer Not Working Battlestar Galactica Just Yet? Last week, we passed on the news that Bryan Singer would direct the upcoming big screen version of Battlestar Galactica which would follow the original 1978 series instead of the recent re-imagining from SyFy. Now, Sci Fi Scoop is reporting that the film may not be moving forward just yet. According to that site, his next project will most likely be a remake of Jack the Giant Killer for New Line. And after that he has a commitment with Warner Bros. for a remake of Excaliber and he is also eyeing an X-Men prequel titled X-Men: First Class. So whether he sticks with the Battlestar Galactica project, and whether that comes to fruition with our without him, remains to be seen.
Warehouse 13 Renewed: Coming as no surprise, SyFy’s hit new series Warehouse 13 received a renewal for a second season. It is the most-watched original show in that network’s history having averaged 3.7 million viewers per episode so far in its first season. It has also scored well with female audiences, delivering the highest numbers ever from that demographic for the cable channel. That was actually one of the goals for the network when it recently rebranded to SyFy this past July. Now if only they would pick up ABC Family’s cancelled The Middleman to pair up with the series, they could probably boost their female audience even more.
ABC Television Series in the Works: The Fall 2009 season has not even begun, but ABC is already working on potential new Science Fiction and Fantasy related television shows. They have picked up Clive Barker’s Hotel which Barker will produce and Saw franchise veterans Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton will write. The series would focus on ghostly occurrences at a haunted hotel. Also, ABC plans to move forward with a small screen version of the book The Time Traveler’s Wife, which just recently hit theaters with a feature film adaptation. Friends creator Marta Kauffman will develop it as a series and allegedly ABC had plans for this years before the movie came out. Both series, if picked up, would bow no sooner than Spring 2010.
Movie News – Shazam and Yellow Submarine: With the all success of super heroes on the big screen of late, DC is looking to kick-off yet another franchise in that realm. They are moving forward with a feature film adaptation of Shazam! which will be written by Bill Birch and Geoff Johns. Film plans for this character have actually been floating about for a while, so we will see if this attempt will gain any momentum. Also, iconic director Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forest Gump) is hoping to remake the classic animated movie The Yellow Submarine which starred the Beatles. He is currently in negotiations over the rights for the property and would do it in the performance capture animation style that he used for Polar Express and the upcoming A Christmas Carol. No word on whether the two surviving Beatles would be involved with the project.

Weekend Box Office Results – District 9 Takes Number 1, G.I. Joe Drops to Number 2
August 18, 2009 at 7:00 am | In Box Office Results, Paul S. White | 2 CommentsTags: Science Fiction Movies
District 9’s opening weekend Box Office draw of $37 million may seem like a meager sum compared to the opening weekends of this Summer’s movies like Transformers ($109 million), Harry Potter ($78 million), or Star Trek ($73 million), but it still helped it take the top spot and cover its modest budget of $30 million. The Peter Jackson produced independent film opened in August because it was of a much different ilk than the typical Summer blockbuster film, but it can surely count itself as a winner after its first weekend. Meanwhile, G.I. Joe took a significant plummet from its somewhat disappointing opening weekend, pulling in only $22 million at the Number 2 slot. And date-movie choice The Time Traveler’s Wife had a rather unspectacular opening weekend with an $18.6 million draw at the Number 3 slot, but then that was right about in line with expectations for the film.
As Transformers heads down the charts after eight weeks of release (it is currently at Number 15), it is quickly approaching $400 million in domestic revenue. Meanwhile, both Up and Night at the Museum finally bowed out after twelve and thirteen weeks in the Top 20 respectively. And clunker Aliens in the Attic, currently at the Number 17 spot, will likely exit from the Top 20 as well by next week.
Following are the results for all of the Science Fiction and Fantasy oriented movies in the Top 20 for the weekend of August 14-16:
Title / Box Office Rank (Rank Prior Week) / Weekend (Total) Draw
1) District 9 – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $37.35 MM ($37.35 MM)
2) G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra – Prior Wk: 1, Draw (Total): $22.32 MM ($98.58 MM)
3) The Time Traveler’s Wife – Prior Wk: New, Draw (Total): $18.62 MM ($18.62 MM)
5) G-Force – Prior Wk: 3, Draw (Total): $6.92 MM ($99.06 MM)
7) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – Prior Wk: 4, Draw (Total): $5.14 MM ($283.88 MM)
15) Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – Prior Wk: 12, Draw (Total): $1.6 MM ($396.76 MM)
16) Orphan – Prior Wk: 10, Draw (Total): $1.58 MM ($38.35 MM)
17) Aliens in the Attic – Prior Wk: 8, Draw (Total): $1.45 MM ($20.57 MM)
19) Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs – Prior Wk: 14, Draw (Total): $1.27 MM ($190.86 MM)

Weekly Update – Bryan Singer to Direct Battlestar Galactica Movie; The Sarah Connor Chronicles May Live on
August 17, 2009 at 7:31 am | In News and Updates, Paul S. White | Leave a CommentTags: Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Eureka, Heroes, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles
Bryan Singer to Work on BSG Movie: The much-rumored big screen adaptation of Battlestar Galactica is moving forward and now Bryan Singer (X-Men, Superman Returns) has been officially attached to the project. According to HitFix, Singer will produce and direct the project which will not be a continuation of the version that recently finished its run on Sci Fi Channel, but will give us yet another incarnation of the story that began with the 1978 series. Singer had actually been working on a BSG revival with the Sci Fi Channel earlier this decade, but it got shelved after the September 11th attacks because of the feeling that depicting a Cylon sneak-attack would not sit well with American audiences at that time. This version would have been a sequel to the original 70’s series. By the time that the Sci Fi Channel decided to revisit the project, Singer was unavailable, thus leading to the version imagined by Ronald Moore and David Eick. Original series creator Glen Larson will be involved with the new movie as well which is currently only in the planning stages.
Sarah Connor Chronicles to Return? Rumors continue to circulate across the Internet that FOX’s recently cancelled Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles may still live on. Allegedly, a direct-to-DVD movie is on the horizon which could lead to a revival of the TV series. This is supposedly tied to the next big screen installment which may or may not tie back to the television series. All of this is purely speculation at this point, though, and no official word has been released. Stay tuned for further developments.
Two Comic Book Related Series in the Works: This past week, word has come out about plans for two different television series with comic book roots. AMC, known for its critically acclaimed series Mad Men and its upcoming remake of The Prisoner, is working on an adaptation of the Image Comics graphic novel series The Walking Dead written by Robert Kirkman. The series focuses on police officer Rick Grimes as he leads a group of survivors after a zombie apocalypse. Also, NBC has picked up Midnight Mass, based on the Vertigo comic book series. This one follows a husband and wife team who investigate cases involving the supernatural. Both projects are still in the early phases and have not announced a timeline for completion.
Casting News: NBC’s Heroes gets yet another cast member and once again dips into the Science Fiction and Fantasy vaults to bring forth a familiar face. Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters movies, will come on board as a Baltimore police officer. Also, comedian Patton Oswalt will join the cast of Caprica playing (what else?) a comedian who hosts a popular talk show. And Joe Morton, who plays Henry Deacon on SyFy’s Eureka, will join ABC’s Brother’s and Sister’s in a recurring role this coming season. There is no word on whether this will affect his ongoing participation in the SyFy series which was recently renewed for a forth season.
