Video Availability

In the Video Availability column of the Index I have the most accessible format for which the particular series is available.  So if it has been released to DVD, that is indicated, however, the program may also be available on VHS.  If it is only available in VHS, that is indicated, and so on.  If I have indicated “oop” after the video format, then the series was available in that format but is now out of print.  Out of print videos can be found on Amazon.com, Ebay, and any number of websites that specialize in hard to find videos.  PAL DVD format will not play on Region 1 DVD players sold in North America.  They will play on region free DVD players (if you can find them) and I have had some success viewing them on computer DVD-ROM players.

You may also be able to find some of the series that have not been officially released to video.  I have found several sites that offer these series on DVD, though the legality of their product is somewhat questionable.  They are typically selling episodes which were recorded from network or cable broadcasts.  And some are transfers from VHS recordings.  The sites claim that they are selling these for the cost of materials and transfer and therefore are not making a profit, or they claim that they believe the shows to be in the public domain.  Of the sites that I have experimented with, the video quality has ranged from marginal to excellent, and the prices have been reasonable.  Because I am not certain about the legality of these video offerings, I will not list the sites here.  But if you are interested in finding a specific program, try typing the name into your favorite search engine and see what comes up.

Video Formats:

Sources for New DVDs/VHS:

Axiom’s Edge Science Fiction and Fantasy Webstore
This site pulls together all of the Science Fiction and Fantasy television series available from Amazon.com into one place.  Plus, the Webstore includes a complete listing of all series in the genre available on DVD.

Amazon.com UK
The UK version of Amazon.com has a large selection of British Science Fiction and Fantasy series available in the PAL DVD format.  Many of these, such as Blake’s 7 are not available in the United States in Region 1 format.  This site also has a few American series in the PAL DVD format which have not yet been released stateside such as The Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Six Million Dollar Man and The Bionic Woman (1976).

Vintage TV and Movies
This site offers several older Science Fiction and Fantasy television shows that are now truly in the public domain (as opposed to the video offerings that some sites claim to be in the public domain).  Available from this site are such shows as Lights Out, Science Fiction Theatre, and Men into Space.  The DVDs are video transfers from television broadcasts, so their quality is highly variable.  But if you are interested in tracking down these older series, the price and quality is acceptable.

Sources for Used DVDs/VHS:

Ebay
There are always sellers offering new, used, and out of print copies of Science Fiction and Fantasy series on DVD or video tape on Ebay.

Amazon.com
Just type in the name of the series you are looking for into the Amazon search.  If it was ever available, chances are one of the sellers will have a copy listed.
